Heli-Hike & Rail Adventure

Combine a scenic helicopter flight and a ride aboard the historic White Pass narrow-gauge railroad with a wilderness hike in the Tongass National Forest. This fully guided adventure is the perfect mix of exercise and breathtaking scenery.

First, board a helicopter for the flight over the Juneau Icefield to Glacier Station. Set off on a five-mile hike along the remote upper Skagway River to view magnificent Laughton Glacier. Your guides provide information about the region’s unique natural history throughout the hike, allowing plenty of time for wildlife viewing and photographs. Bears, mountain goats and moose all call the Laughton Valley home.

After returning to Glacier Station, board the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad for the hour-long scenic ride back to Skagway, enjoying a snack of salmon pâté and crackers.

NOTE: In early summer, snow conditions may require an alternate version of the Heli-Hike tour. During this time, you may experience a unique trekking opportunity on the:

Snowshoe Hike & Rail Adventure

Ride the “Scenic Railway of the World” and then strap on snowshoes for an exhilarating hike.

Board the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad for a ride to “Gateway”, a wilderness whistle stop at mile 23, where you are outfitted with snowshoes. After a brief orientation, embark on a four- to five-mile roundtrip hike. Your guides discuss the natural history and geography of the region, home to moose, bear and golden eagles. Learn the dynamics of snow science and have lunch in this unique alpine setting. Enjoy breathtaking views of mountains in all directions as you snowshoe over the glacially carved terrain. Back at the trailhead, you are greeted with a traditional “bush buffet,” complete with a cold brew, before your train ride back to Skagway. Snowshoe experience is not required, however this is a strenuous hike, and participants should be in good physical condition.

Hiking boots are available; please notify the onboard Tour Office to reserve a pair in your size.

Duration of the alternate tour is approximately 9 hours and the price is $239 per person with a minimum age of 9.

Notarized written consent is required for children traveling into Canada without both parents. Weight surcharge ($65) may apply on this flight. Due to weight and balance limitations, as well as passenger safety and comfort, the helicopter companies have advised that guests weighing 250 lbs. or more (fully clothed) will be assessed the weight surcharge to reserve adequate space onboard the helicopter. Guests weighing 250 lbs. or more should reserve 2 tickets and, once onboard, go to the Tour Office to have the extra ticket charge adjusted down to the surcharge amount. Refer to page 17 in the 2008 Alaska Adventures Ashore Brochure for more information. Helicopter excursions are not refundable unless cancelled on or by the day after embarkation. Participants should be in good physical condition; this is a 5-mile hike over difficult terrain. Wear a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and/or sweater and shoes with ankle support.
